What interests me more about cars then the actual car, is the design process that unfolds and how a mental concept transforms into reality – alchemy. Again, you have to look beyond appetites of a consumer, and recognize the creative process objectively. You have to go to the source. Designer Robert Lesnik senior manager of Exterior Design for Mercedes-Benz Research & Development at Daimler AG has been been the mind behind the recent Benz Concept vehicle. Read what he has to say…
“I was always sketching. I sent my sketches to Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Volkswagen in the 1990s. A vice-president of design at Mercedes-Benz actually took notice of my sketches and told me of a design school [at Pforzheim University] near Stuttgart [in Germany] that specialized in transportation design. I had no clue what I was doing, but I applied to the school and scored maximum points for the entrance test,” said Lesnik.
Ironically, the 41-year-old Slovenian designer, who read mechanical engineering at the University of Maribor, Slovenia (former Yugoslavia), applied to the Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Arts and Design three times and was declined on every attempt. Today, Lesnik’s role at Mercedes-Benz is to oversee designers. Car development starts “from three to four weeks of sketches, 10 models at one-fourth scale and finally three models to full-scale. I’d estimate we devote 10% of our time to sketching and 90% to overseeing full-scale clay models,” he said.”Mercedes-Benz’s overall design philosophy is about attention to detail….”
“My passion is still with me every morning I wake up. You have to love what you do. After 14 years I still have that feeling.”
On the subject of what makes a good designer, Lesnik said, “It depends on what you are working on. I am always sketching even after 15 years on the job. But most importantly, you have to be creative. You either have it or you don’t….”
